Sciatica is kind of nervous pain produced by an irritation of the nerve roots that lead to the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body. It is beginning from nerve roots in the spinal cord in the low back and it goes down through the buttock, then its branches extend down the back of the leg to the ankle and foot. Sciatica pain is experienced in the region of the buttocks, behind the thigh and the leg. Sciatica is mostly a result of a lumbar disc herniation directly pressing on the nerve, inflammation in the region where the sciatic nerve passes through the curve of the hip bone is also responsible for this disease. Some other reasons for sciatica pain are bone spurs caused by arthritis, spinal stenosis, pinched nerve caused by injury, tumors, infection of the lumber spine and irritation of the sciatic nerve during pregnancy. The pain which is often excruciating in the hip, backside of the high and leg, the patient fells difficulty walking and may not able to sleep well.
Yogaraja guggulu, gokshuradi guggulu, kaishor guggulu, punarnavashtaka kashaya are useful ayurvedic preparation for sciatica. Nirgundi, bala, eranda, shigru, punarnava and masha are very useful herbs in sciatica.
